You’re invited…

You’re invited to participate in a biological data collection blitz in Panama. During the week of 21-29 April 2007, citizens in the United States and elsewhere will be collecting information to discover how many plants, bugs, reptiles, frogs, and other creatures live in one small area near their home. Read more about it here. If you would like to do this in Panama, leave a comment here. Materials, methods, and training will be forthcoming.

31 March 2007 update: If you’d rather not leave a public comment, but would like to sign up for the blitz, you may send an email to panamaplants@yahoo.com.

Hi: Apparently, C&W doesn´t allow me to send a message today. I forwarded this info to Prof. Demetrio Miranda, ecobiologist. Thank you, very much.

Well, it seems it works now. I wanted to warn the readership of the extreme UVB index in David today. The info is available at Instituto de Geociencias, University of Panama, Física de la Atmósfera section. I am in th Stone Age in Physics, but that index is 12, and the erythema-time is 12 minutes. Just to remind that we should apply a sunscreen every two hours and avoid sun exposure as widely recommended. For those foreigners in the area, I have tried fancy and cheap sunblocks, but the best one so far is Eucerin 50 Plus, available at main drugstores. It is medicated. Take care.

    Hilda,

Thank you for forwarding the information to Prof. Demetrio Miranda. And also, thank you for the UVB warning. Very important! Is there a web site we can bookmark to keep up to date on this information?

    Thanks.

    Thank you, Hilda.

This is a very interesting site. I’ve added it to my own bookmarks and also to the links in the right-hand column of the blog.

    Hi miconia,

It is very nice of Mr. Wiilams to provide a machine translation of part of your invitation. Since I am a native Spanish speaker, here is my edited version:

As known, machines translate word by word. They do help, but don´t reason, and I am sure you don´t want to “bombardear” and kill all the species with a sprayer full of insecticide… All in all, it is easier to edit than to create.

    Best regards

    Hilda,

I am deeply indebted to you for your help on this post. As you can see, I’ve replaced the machine translation with yours, so from this point on, readers will not be able to amuse themselves with the original reference to “bombardear,” but I think they’ll understand.

    Thank you so much.

A savanna is…

"...a natural and stable ecosystem occuring under a tropical climate having a relatively continuous layer of xeromorphic grasses and sedges, and often with a discontinuous layer of low trees and shrubs."
